An Except From An Article By Kathy M. Flanders Regarding Flower's Seminar At Utica: Circus music softly filled the background as a clown instructor spoke before the members of a clown class. They were seated among clown dolls, clown pictures, clown music boxes and clown balloons.
"There's a difference between dressing up to look like a clown and being a clown," said Norine Norton of Camden. "Being a clown comes from within. It takes a long time to create a character. You are a toy to amuse and make other people happy. Laughter is a reward, not a put down."
To demonstrate, Norton transformed herself into Flower the Clown and took her pet hot dog, Buns, for a walk.The class laughed as she pretended the hot dog could respond to her commands of "Sit" and "Shake."
"When you take your jeans off to get into costume, you put your problems in your back pocket," Norton said. "Then you take them back out when you wash your
makeup off."
